Starting today and running through Sunday 23 October, the industry will advocate safer gambling, and Sky Bet is looking to play a part in promoting more responsible betting behaviour.
The Flutter-owned brand has unveiled a “mythbusters” programme designed to counter some common gambling misconceptions.
In an email sent to customers, Sky Bet has invited people to learn more about wagering, and in particular, published a breakdown of four betting fallacies.
The first addresses a commonly held belief that “knowing a game well increases your chances of winning.”
Sky Bet conceded that extra knowledge can prove helpful when making a wager, but urged bettors to remember that extra knowledge does not guarantee success.
“At the end of the day, no one can predict the outcome of a game, fight, race or match. Just because your team have won three in a row is no guarantee they’ll win the fourth.”
The brand then went on to remind customers that gambling more does not mean you will eventually win everything back.
“Actually,” Sky Bet said, “the more you gamble, the more likely it is that you’ll lose more money. The odds are always in favour of the bookie.”
In the same vein, Sky Bet also reminded customers that gambling more doesn’t necessarily increase the odds of “a big win.”
“The outcome of each event is totally independent of another, and entirely down to chance,” the brand explained.
Finally, Sky Bet urged customers to not put too much faith in statistics, adding: “There are no hard and fast patterns when it comes to gambling. If there were, everyone would learn then and no one would ever lose.”
Bet365 has since gone on to send a similar email to its customers, without necessarily following the same ‘Mythbusters’ angle.
